We were contacted by this Client when storm damage quite literally took the roof off their 18th Century country mansion, uncovering an even bigger problem in the process.

Newton Hall is a popular wedding venue in Northumberland and it sustained heavy damage during the particularly vicious Storm Arwen.

The Grade 2 listed building required a full new roof, with many of the slates lost or damaged beyond repair.

Upon starting the re-roofing work, our team also identified that the two chimney stacks on the three-storey Georgian mansion were in a seriously poor condition.

Our engineers got involved and ascertained that the stonework was severely corroded, and the structural timbers showed significant signs of deterioration, leaving both stacks unstable and at risk of collapsing vertically through the building, causing untold damage.

Our team had to carefully dismantle the stacks from top to bottom, numbering and preserving the stones for re-use when the chimneys could be safely reconstructed.

Once this work was complete, the roof could be reinstated – using a mixture of salvaged slates from the original roof and second-hand matching slates, which we sourced from a farm in Inverness.

These slates were a perfect match, having been extracted from the same quarry as the originals.

Our team worked tirelessly to complete the work as quickly as possible, all while allowing the venue to safely remain open for the many weddings they had scheduled following their closure during the Covid-19 pandemic.
