According to local tradition, sometime shortly after the Norman conquest, an apparition of the Virgin Mary occurred at the bottom of the Ouse valley, in a place that had been called Gese Muth "the mouth of the Ouse”. With Mary’s apparition holding the infant Christ, the area then became known as "the hill of Jesus" which, over time, was shortened to "Jesus Mound" and later Jesmond. To this day, the ruins of St Mary’s Chapel, first recorded in 1272, are in Jesmond Dene on the west side of the valley.
